Blog #2 Where I'm From

I am from the southwest door of Cali.
From the most visited border from the neighbor country.
From a small city covered with bright lights at night.
I am from Tijuana, a nice destination to have some fun.

I am from where I spent my infancy and puberty.
From where I formed my attitude and personality.

I am fearless
Life has taught me not to be afraid of changes.
I am  opportunistic
I left my homeland to move to San Diego for a better life.
I am confidence
I truly believe in myself and dare to achieve my dreams.
I am continually changing because life is a process.

Analysis
Writing this poem was kind of hard for me because I have no creativity, so of course, I read the mentor's poem a couple of times to get an idea of how to organize mine. After reading Lyon's poem, I decided to follow her poem's structure. I noticed that in every stanza she describes something from where she is from. I wanted to express in my poem part of my personality and my background; I wanted to make the poem short and clear so I could catch the attention of the reader from the beginning to the end.
While doing the brainstorm I decided to use as my themes were my background and description of my personality so my classmates could have an idea of who I am in real person. I personally do not like to write poetry, however, it was easy to come up with one by having the mentor's text. Since we are not going to meet anytime during the semester, I think that this is a creative form of presenting who you are.

  1. Hi Michelle,

I like the theme of your poem a lot, it speaks of strength and change. The language you used to describe Tijuana was very well done. I used to live on a mountain and it had a view of Tijuana, so whenever I'd look out my balcony I'd see the hills covered in the lights and always wonder what that place must be like. Then I turned 19 and found out for myself, and I can agree that it is a place of fun haha. I also enjoyed how you described yourself directly, it really lets us as a reader know who you are and see into your personality. I too struggled with writing a poem because I have no sense of creativity but you did a great job with yours. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Hey Michelle,

    Hey

I can see that you have experienced a lot of change throughout your life. I also leaned heavily on the mentor text to write my poem as well since I haven’t been assigned a poem to write since I was in high school. I enjoyed how you shifted from the physical aspects of your hometown to focusing more on your personal development throughout the poem. Moving from Mexico is a huge step to take in your life and it takes a lot of courage to pursue your dreams. I wish you the best of luck with all your pursuits. Thank you for sharing this with us.
